Job Description

Integrity in Design. Leadership in Action.

Are you an experienced Structural Project Engineer who enjoys the 'puzzle' of complex building systems? Thompson & Litton is looking for a self-motivated professional to join our collaborative, multidisciplinary team. From designing high-performance systems for new institutional landmarks to conducting vital structural investigations on existing facilities, you will be a key player in delivering safe, innovative solutions to our communities.

The Role: Analysis, Leadership, and Oversight As a Structural Project Engineer at T&L, you will go beyond the calculations to lead the structural narrative of a project. You will:

  • Determine System Choices: Perform and provide direction for structural design, calculations, and system selection across a variety of building types.
  • Lead the Project Design Group: Oversee the work of entry-level engineers and technicians, ensuring the production of high-quality design drawing packages.
  • Be a Field Expert: Conduct site visits and forensic structural investigations for renovations and additions to assess existing conditions.
  • Collaborate Across Trades: Interface with architects and other engineering disciplines to ensure integrated, on-budget project delivery.
  • Utilize Specialty Software for Analysis and Design: Become proficient in utilizing the RISA suite of software and Enercalc to economize your designs and increase efficiency.
  • Manage the Lifecycle: Generate construction specifications using CSI-based templates and handle contract administration, including RFIs and submittal reviews.

What You Bring

  • Experience: Ideally 5–7+ years of dedicated experience as a Structural Project Engineer or structural designer within the commercial, industrial, and institutional sectors.
  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis (ABET-accredited).
  • Credentials: Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Tennessee, Virginia, or West Virginia is required, with the ability to obtain licensure in other states in the near future.
  • Material Mastery: Proficient in design using Steel, Concrete, Wood, Masonry, PEMB, and Light Gauge Steel.
  • Strategic Thinking: Experience estimating engineering effort and managing project scopes.

Why Thompson & Litton? Invested in Your Growth and Advancement We don't just offer a job; we build lifelong careers. At Thompson & Litton, we believe in promoting from within and actively investing in your continuous professional development. Whether it's supporting advanced technical certifications, expanding your project management capabilities, or providing clear pathways to firm leadership, we ensure our engineers have the tools and structural support to continuously advance.
