Resident Sound Designer and Audio Engineer
The Resident Sound Designer / Audio Engineer creates, implements, and maintains all audio elements for mainstage & education productions, ensuring high-quality sound that supports storytelling. This role oversees sound system setup and operation, runs audio during technical rehearsals and assigned performances, troubleshoots issues, and manages equipment.
Working closely with directors and production staff, they develop cohesive sound designs aligned with artistic goals, and may supervise audio crew and support educational programming. This position requires strong technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
Essential Job Duties
- Provide sound design and audio implementation for mainstage and education productions, supporting the artistic vision of each project.
- Program, operate, and maintain audio/SFX consoles for technical rehearsals, performances, and special events.
- Oversee microphone systems, including setup, placement, frequency coordination, maintenance, and operation during rehearsals and performances.
- Manage the use, testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of all audio equipment for productions, rentals, and touring needs.
- Support audio/video recording and playback needs as assigned.
- Collaborate with other production departments during load-ins, strikes, and changeovers.
- Supervise and mentor apprentices and overhire crew, with a focus on sound and related technical areas.
- Coordinate planning, communication, and documentation for guest sound designers to ensure a smooth design and production process.
- Assist the Production Director in developing, tracking, and maintaining sound budgets and production schedules.
- Maintain accurate inventory and perform routine maintenance of all sound equipment.
- Ensure a safe environment for artists, staff, and audiences by adhering to and enforcing all safety policies and procedures.
- Maintain clean, organized, and efficient workspaces across all company facilities.
- Work a flexible schedule based on production demands, including evenings and weekends.
Other Job Duties
- Attend all required meetings and rehearsals, including but not limited to production meetings, all-staff meetings, technical rehearsals, and dress rehearsals.
- Participate in company events and activities as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Production Director.
Minimum Required Education, Training, and Experience
- B.A or B.F.A. in Technical Theater or equivalent experience.
- Working knowledge of theatrical sound systems.
- Working knowledge of basic scenic construction and theatrical rigging.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Serve as a representative of the Theater, providing excellent customer service to patrons, vendors, guest artists, and staff.
- Communicate effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing, with individuals at all levels of the organization.
- Collaborate effectively with staff, production teams, and guest artists in a fast-paced, creative environment.
- Demonstrate a commitment to Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression principles, fostering an inclusive and respectful workplace.
- Create and implement imaginative sound designs that support theatrical storytelling.
- Possess a working understanding of musical timing — including the ability to align sound cues and underscore to tempo, rhythm, and phrase structure
- Live mix, engineer, and execute sound elements for technical rehearsals and performances.
- Operate, program, and troubleshoot digital audio consoles including Yamaha consoles, wireless microphone systems, and backstage communication systems.
- Utilize networked audio systems, including Dante audio networking, for routing and integration.
- Utilize show control and playback software (e.g., QLab, SFX/Timeline Theateatrics) and sound editing programs (e.g., Pro-Tools, Reaper, Studio One, Audacity, GarageBand).
- Apply working knowledge of MIDI and OSC protocols in production environments.
- Maintain working knowledge of music licensing requirements, including BMI and ASCAP, ensuring compliance for performances and events.
- Demonstrate understanding of proper audio equipment use, capabilities, and limitations.
- Operate theatrical rigging systems, including a double purchase fly system.
- Safely use basic hand and power tools.
- Exhibit strong time management, organizational, and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Maintain proficiency in standard computer applications, including Google Workspace and Microsoft Office.
- Maintain current CPR and First Aid certification.
- Preferred skill: Experience with basic music composition or original scoring
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Stand or kneel for extended periods of time.
- Work at heights of up to 70’.
- Climb stairs and ladders.
- Lift, push, or pull at least 50lbs.
- Valid driver’s license with the ability to drive a full-size pickup truck.
- On-site attendance is required.
